iPad 3 Review - What You Need To Know About The New iPad

Apple's next iteration of their tablet, the iPad 3 has been launched and it has brought in significant changes to make the product much more superior than anything else in the market. The famous retina display makes its entry in to the iPad family and the new A5X chip doubles up the graphics power of the device. Let us explore what the new iPad offers and whether it is a worthy successor of the iPad 2. Against the speculation, Apple has not named the latest model as iPad 3 or the iPad HD, it is just the 'new iPad'. Apple is now moving away from the numeric naming convention for its tablet product line.

Design And Build Quality

If you have used iPad 2, the design wouldn't be new for you. There is hardly any change externally, except for the bigger camera optics at the back. The new iPad is thicker than the iPad 2 (9.4mm vs 8.8mm), however it's quite insignificant.
Display:The biggest upgrade for the new iPad comes in form of the display. Apple finally brings the retina display to the iPad product line. The 9.7 inch display supports a 2048 X 1536 resolution. To put things in perspective, this resolution translates in to 3.1 million pixels, which is nearly a million pixels more than most 1080p HD TVs. Now that's a major leap over the 1024 X 768 panel in older models. Apple has not only increased the pixel density of the screen, but the color gamut has also increased by 44%. The visual difference between the new iPad and the iPad2 or for that matter any other tablet in the market is quite dramatic and it is something that will impact the user experience directly. It is one of the most compelling reasons to buy or upgrade to the new iPad.

Processing Power: The new iPad gets the A5X chip, which has a quad-core GPU and a dual-core CPU. Given the increase in resolution, Apple has focused on increasing the graphics capability of the device. Theoretically, the GPU of the new iPad is 2 times more powerful than the iPad 2. Apple claims that the A5X is nearly 4X faster than the Nvidia's Tegra 3 chip mobile GPU. However, due to the increased resolution, the real impact in terms of performance has to be seen as the increase in number of resolution is also manifold. Apple has continued with the dual-core CPU, as still most of the apps still struggle to even use the second core.

Camera: The camera on iPad 2 was a bit of disappointment. However, Apple has put up a much more capable camera which can capture 5MP stills and can record 1080p videos. The camera is similar to what you find on iPhone 4S. Both the images and the videos looked excellent and significantly better than what was delivered by iPad 2.

4G LTE Support: The new iPad supports the 4G LTE super fast mobile broadband. This is good news for US consumer who would be able to use the 4G high speed broadband.

Battery Life: The battery life of the new iPad is expected to be around 10 hours in normal use and 9 hours when using 4G

Conclusion: Apple continues to remain the front runner in the tablet market, not just in terms of sales, but also in terms of cutting edge technology and innovation. Apple yet again takes the product a step further and raises the bar for the industry. It is no doubt the best product out there in the tablet market and there is still no worthy competitor to it. If you have been holding back from buying a tablet till now, the new iPad leaves little reason to wait anymore.
